INERTIA

Jamila said she had come here for a month and she had now been here a year. She had needed a holiday, she said. She told people that even when they did not ask but one night, in bed, he asked what had really brought her here.

‘I needed a break from my life.’

He nodded, lit a cigarette and she didn’t say anymore.

When he left in the morning, she slowly got up and went to sit on the roof, a place she could visualise if she shut her eyes. There was the sea in front and the mountain at her back. She had settled into a routine, and while once the desire to escape had made her seek out this place, now inertia kept her here.

She had no wish to move, she didn’t want to go to another place. Her days were repetitions, replicas of each other, and it shocked her to realise that this was what had driven her from the other place. Each day was a copy of the previous one and she went through her days in a fog. There were too many evenings when she came home to a dinner of tinned sardines before collapsing into bed, only to rise in the morning to repeat the pattern across the day ahead. She had fled not because she needed a holiday. Instead it was with the sense that this is not a life.

But she did not tell him this. She did not elaborate when she had the chance, and then as time passed it seemed unimportant to mention to him anyway.

Perhaps people make the decisions of their lives from a place of willpower but that has not been her experience so far. She goes some place, she does something without a reason in mind, and then she continues there because she cannot think of anything else she wants. It is a vine creeping through her life but she will not let anyone into the truth of her life. Let them see excitement. Who cares for the dull truth when a lie is shinier?
